On the far side of Volcán Barú from Boquete sits Cerro Punta, Panama's highest and coolest agricultural valley — a completely different mountain landscape just a couple of hours away, and an easy add-on for travelers who want to see more of the Chiriquí highlands.
Panama's Vegetable Basket
At around 1,800–2,000 meters, Cerro Punta is even higher and cooler than Boquete, with a patchwork of terraced fields growing strawberries, vegetables and flowers for markets across the country. The drive there winds through some of Panama's most dramatic highland scenery, with the profile of Volcán Barú visible from a completely different angle than the one you know from Boquete.
The Sendero Los Quetzales Crossing
The most popular way to experience Cerro Punta is not by road at all: Sendero Los Quetzales, a roughly 9.6 km cloud-forest trail, connects Boquete and Cerro Punta directly across the flank of the volcano. Many visitors hike it one-way with a driver arranged on each end, spending 5 to 7 hours crossing dense cloud forest, bamboo groves and footbridges — and it is widely considered the best place in the country to spot the resplendent quetzal, especially during nesting season from January to May.
La Amistad International Park
Cerro Punta borders Parque Internacional La Amistad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between Panama and Costa Rica and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Central America. The park protects an enormous range of elevations and ecosystems, from cloud forest to páramo, and is a serious draw for birders and naturalists who want to go beyond Boquete's more accessible trails.
Should You Add Cerro Punta to Your Trip?
If you have an extra day and enjoy hiking, crossing Sendero Los Quetzales into Cerro Punta is one of the most memorable things you can do in the region — just arrange transportation in advance for whichever end you finish on, since public transport back to Boquete from Cerro Punta is limited. If you are short on time, a half-day scenic drive up and back still delivers the highland farm scenery and a real sense of how much the landscape changes on the other side of the volcano.
